Vyner benched as Wrexham beat Millwall 3-0 in Championship

Wrexham earned their first English Championship victory with a 3-0 win over Millwall, while Kenya defender Zak Vyner watched from the bench. The result moved Wrexham into the top half of the table and gave manager Phil Parkinson relief after a winless opening three matches.

Vyner had started every game before the visit to south London and completed all 90 minutes in each one. He was dropped after an error during last weekend’s defeat by Birmingham City, with Parkinson making several changes as pressure grew around a Wrexham team that had spent heavily.

The decision produced the response Parkinson wanted. Wrexham took a narrow lead in a competitive first half when Millwall defender Zak Sturge turned the ball into his own net. The visitors then strengthened their control after the interval, with Kieffer Moore and Jacques Ekomie adding well-taken goals.

The margin was Wrexham’s biggest since their promotion to the second tier last year. Millwall were also dealing with a lengthy injury list and suffered another difficult result after losing heavily at Southampton on Saturday. Their latest defeat means they have conceded eight goals across their past two matches.

Parkinson considered the victory deserved and welcomed the way his players responded to the Birmingham loss. He also felt Wrexham had collected fewer points than their performances warranted before Wednesday’s match, but stressed that the team needed to respond on the pitch.

Vyner was included in Kenya’s squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Tuesday, but his immediate club position is uncertain. After Wrexham’s strongest result of the season, he must now compete to regain his place in a side Parkinson will be reluctant to change after such a complete performance.
