Ward-Prowse returns to Southampton with Premier League ambition

James Ward-Prowse has returned to Southampton after three years away, bringing a stated ambition to help the club win promotion back to the Premier League. The 31-year-old midfielder has taken the No. 30 shirt at St Mary’s, the number he wore when he made his senior debut in 2011.

Ward-Prowse joined Southampton’s academy at eight and spent two decades with the club. He played 410 first-team matches before leaving for West Ham, a total that placed him 11th in Southampton’s all-time appearance rankings at the time of his departure.

His last Southampton appearance came in the club’s opening Championship fixture at Sheffield Wednesday in the 2023/24 season. Southampton went on to secure promotion to the Premier League that campaign, and Ward-Prowse is now back with the task of helping them make that journey again.

The midfielder said his attachment to Southampton remained strong throughout his time away. He continued to follow the team’s results and believes the relationship he has with the supporters, the club and the city played an important part in his decision to return.

Ward-Prowse left Southampton for West Ham after a difficult period and later endured limited playing opportunities over the past two seasons. He also spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest and Burnley. His first season at West Ham had produced 18 goal contributions, but regular football became harder to secure afterwards.

The return gives Ward-Prowse an opportunity to rebuild his place in the team while contributing to Southampton’s promotion effort. He has stressed that his position will not be guaranteed and that he must earn selection alongside a group containing few players from his previous spell. The No. 30 shirt also carries personal meaning, recalling his first-team debut at Crystal Palace as a 16-year-old.
