WBC Preview: Camila Zamorano Faces Perla Pérez for Atomweight Crown

Camila Zamorano puts her WBC atomweight title on the line against pressure fighter Perla Pérez in a meeting of contrasting Mexican styles.

Camila Zamorano, 18, will defend the WBC atomweight championship against Perla Pérez, with the 102-pound division’s world title at stake. The Mexican bout brings together a young champion built around precision and a challenger known for constant pressure.

Zamorano is unbeaten and became only the fifth woman to win the WBC atomweight crown. The Sonoran has developed a reputation for clean technique, disciplined movement and a level of tactical awareness unusual for a fighter of her age. Her challenge will be to maintain control while Pérez tries to make the contest physical and crowded.

Pérez enters with a professional record of 9-9-1 and one knockout. She has also drawn on 45 amateur bouts and previous world-title experience in Europe. Her approach is based on advancing behind a sustained work rate, using close-range pressure to disrupt opponents who prefer to box at distance.

The atomweight limit is 102 pounds, the lightest division in professional boxing. Its fights often depend on speed, footwork, combinations and conditioning rather than size, leaving little room for a boxer who cannot keep up with the pace or respond to repeated attacks.

The championship has been contested since August 31, 2007, when Thailand’s Winyu Paradorn Gym beat Japan’s Momo Koseki in the first fight for the title. Koseki won the rematch a year later and began one of the division’s longest and most notable reigns.

Zamorano’s technical game and Pérez’s forward movement create a clear stylistic contrast. The champion is seeking to strengthen her place among the division’s elite, while Pérez is attempting to produce the defining upset of her career. Their meeting also adds another chapter to Mexico’s long history of high-level women’s boxing.
