Brooklyn parades WBC champion Bruce Carrington in Brownsville

Undefeated WBC featherweight champion Bruce Carrington was honoured with a Brownsville parade after winning his title and first defence.

Brooklyn celebrated Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington with a parade through Brownsville after the 29-year-old became the World Boxing Council featherweight champion. Hundreds of supporters gathered along Sutter Avenue as the undefeated fighter travelled through the neighbourhood where he grew up and began boxing.

The event, known as Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington Day, ended at an outdoor ring. Carrington was received there by prominent figures from Brooklyn’s boxing tradition, including Mike Tyson, Zab Judah, Daniel Jacobs and Riddick Bowe.

Carrington won the vacant WBC title in New York on January 31, stopping Carlos Castro in the ninth round. He then made the first defence of his belt on July 4 in Cleveland, defeating René Palacios by unanimous decision.

Those results have taken Carrington’s professional record to 18-0, with 10 victories inside the distance. He is ranked second by The Ring and remains unbeaten as he looks towards the leading names in the 126-pound division.

WBA champion Brandon Figueroa and WBO titleholder Rafael “El Divino” Espinoza are among the fighters on Carrington’s wider target list. The fight he most strongly wants, however, is a unification bout with IBF champion Angelo Leo, who has a 26-1 record with 12 knockouts.

Carrington has identified Leo as the most logical next opponent because neither fighter currently has a bout scheduled. His larger ambition is to become the first undisputed featherweight champion of the four-belt era, giving the Brownsville celebration a clear link to his plans for the division.
