Zambia’s Chalwe leads 2026 Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Amateur Open after 65

Zambia’s Gilbert Chalwe moved into first place at the 2026 Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Amateur Open after producing a bogey-free seven-under-par 65 in the second round. The Nkana Golf Club player holds a one-stroke advantage with two rounds remaining in Kampala.

Chalwe made seven birdies and 11 pars during his second-round effort. His performance marked a significant turnaround after he recorded seven bogeys in the opening round. The 22-year-old is now ahead of fellow Zambian Dominic Musonda, who finished second in last year’s championship at Lugazi.

Musonda shares second place with Uganda’s Joseph Kasozi. Kasozi, who began the day as the leader, returned a level-par 72 in round two and remained within one shot of Chalwe. John Musiimenta is fourth on 142, while another Zambian, Musamba Kapoma, occupies fifth with 145.

The second round was played in dry, sunny conditions after rain had left the Kitante course’s fairways and greens heavy on the opening day. The change allowed the ball to roll more freely, and 116 elite gross players took part in the round. A group including Peter Mayende, Samuel Bazaale, Joel Okot, Lawrence Walakira, Kenya’s Chrispine Owuor and Tanzania’s Isiaka Dunia remains in contention inside the top 20.

Defending champion Joseph Cwinya-ai faces a difficult task after an opening 73 was followed by a six-over 78. His two-round total is 151, leaving him outside the leading positions as the tournament moves into its third round.

Round three is scheduled for Wednesday, 27 August 2026. Chalwe will begin the moving day with Musonda and Kasozi closest behind, while Musiimenta and Kapoma lead the next group in the standings.
