Zuffa Boxing terminates Oleksandr Gvozdyk after knockout loss

Zuffa Boxing has terminated the contract of former WBC world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk following a knockout defeat. The 39-year-old boxer saw his tenure with the promotion end after just one fight.

Gvozdyk suffered a seventh-round knockout against Radivoje Kalajdzic in February. During the bout, the former light heavyweight champion dropped Kalajdzic twice and appeared to be close to a stoppage victory before the reversal occurred. Gvozdyk noted that his desire to finish the fight led him to neglect his defense in a division known for heavy hitting.

The boxer revealed that the contract termination was delivered via email in April. This occurred while Gvozdyk was preparing for a potential return to the ring in May. He stated that Zuffa invoked a specific clause in his agreement that allows the promotion to terminate a contract if a fighter loses.

Gvozdyk said the decision was unexpected because the initial feedback following the February fight had been positive. He explained that the contract leaves fighters vulnerable, as the promotion maintains the right to end the professional relationship immediately upon a defeat.

The termination marks a significant consequence of the Zuffa boxing roster structure. While the approach ensures fighters remain competitive, it also means a single loss can end a fighter's career with the organization.
