Abuja Velodrome Hosts 2026 Japanese Ambassador’s Karate Cup
The 2026 Japanese Ambassador’s Cup Karate Championship starts Thursday in Abuja, with rankings and African Championship qualification at stake.
The 2026 Japanese Ambassador’s Cup Karate Championship begins on Thursday at the Package A velodrome of the Moshood Abuja National Stadium, with the competition scheduled to conclude on Saturday at the same venue.
The three-day event is organised by the Karate Federation of Nigeria in partnership with the Embassy of Japan. It will feature competitors from several categories, including some of the leading karate athletes in Nigeria.
The championship has been included on the federation’s calendar as a KFN Ranked Event – Factor 6. That status gives the participants an opportunity to improve their positions in the national ranking through their performances in Abuja.
The tournament will also be used to determine qualification for the African Karate Championships, organised by the Union of African Karate Federations. The continental event is scheduled for Algiers, Algeria, from September 6 to 13, 2026.
That qualification element adds significance to the contests, as athletes will be competing for medals while also seeking places in Nigeria’s delegation to the African championships. Coaches and officials will also be involved as the federation assesses the competitors.
The partnership between the Nigerian federation and Japan’s embassy places the championship within a wider effort to support karate’s development in Nigeria. It also provides a platform for continued sporting links between the two countries through the promotion of the discipline.
