AFN, World Athletics officials set to visit Enugu Marathon 2026

AFN and World Athletics officials are due in Enugu nine days before the 2026 marathon, with more than 3,000 runners registered for two races.

Only 9 days remain before the second Enugu City International Marathon, with officials from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and World Athletics expected in the city for the event. The race is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026, and will feature a 42km elite marathon and a 10km fun run.

The planned visit by the two athletics bodies reflects the race’s growing international standing. Their representatives are expected to review the race arrangements, meet elite competitors and hold discussions with key stakeholders before the start. The visit will also assess Enugu’s ability to stage major road races and support its ambitions of hosting more international athletics events.

More than 3,000 runners have registered for the two categories. The field includes Olympians, continental champions, grassroots athletes and recreational participants, giving the event a mix of elite and mass-participation competition. Nilayo Sports Management is organising the marathon with backing from the Enugu State Government.

Preparations for the Marathon Expo are continuing ahead of race day. The venue will be used for runners to collect their kits and will also include sponsor activities, wellness booths and fan-focused experiences. Organisers have scheduled the Enugu City International Marathon World Press Conference for August 28, when final logistics, security arrangements and the complete prize purse will be presented by organisers, government representatives, sponsors and selected athletes.

The 42km race will begin at 6:30am from ShopRite on Abakaliki Road. The 10km event will start at 8:30am from Chris Tee Petrol Station on CIC Road and finish at Opara Square by 12:30pm. Security, medical, hydration and traffic plans have been completed for the races.

The organisers are presenting the second edition as a combination of high-level athletics, community participation and the promotion of Enugu’s culture and commerce. The event is also intended to strengthen the city’s profile as a developing sports and tourism centre in West Africa.
