Alozie deactivates Instagram after Nigeria’s 1-0 WAFCON 2026 exit

Nigeria lost 2-1 to South Africa in the decisive playoff for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, while the Super Falcons’ WAFCON 2026 campaign had ended with a 1-0 quarter-final defeat by Cameroon. Michelle Alozie has since deactivated her Instagram account after facing intense online criticism and trolling.

The South Africa result ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the World Cup in Brazil. It also means the Super Falcons will miss the women’s tournament for the first time since the competition began in 1991.

Alozie, a Super Falcons defender, was among the players singled out by frustrated supporters after the playoff defeat. The online reaction included harsh comments and digital abuse, prompting her to step away from Instagram and avoid the scrutiny surrounding the team.

Nigeria’s WAFCON run had already fallen short in the quarter-finals in Morocco. Cameroon eliminated the Super Falcons with a 1-0 victory, leaving Nigeria without a place in the semi-finals before the later World Cup qualification setback.

The two defeats have therefore closed both of Nigeria’s major recent routes to success: the continental title and the next World Cup. Alozie’s decision reflects the pressure directed at the squad after those results, particularly following the historic failure to qualify for the global tournament.
