Aluko defends AFFAN vision and leadership eligibility rules

Dr Toyin Aluko, the founder and President of the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN), has defended the organization's founding principles and leadership structure. She stated that the association was established in 2017 to ensure that retired Nigerian international athletes have a way to remain involved in sports governance and mentorship.

Addressing recent controversies, Aluko clarified that AFFAN is not a competitor to the National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS). While NAWIS is open to any woman with a passion for sports, Aluko explained that AFFAN is strictly for those who have represented Nigeria in international competition. The association was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission by Aluko and five other former internationals: Ngozi Mamma, Halima Benjamin, Funke Oshonaike, Adeola Opeifa, and Cecilia Arinye.

A central point of contention involves the eligibility for top roles such as President, Vice President, and Secretary-General. The current constitution requires these candidates to have represented Nigeria in a sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Aluko argued this rule is vital to maintain the group's focus, noting that experience at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, or All Africa Games provides a unique perspective that school-level sports cannot match.

Aluko identified retired Air Commodore Rahinatu Garba as an individual attempting to undermine the group due to disagreements over these leadership rules. Aluko alleged that Garba, who was not a founding member and did not represent Nigeria as an athlete, opposes the constitutional provisions because she wishes to contest for the presidency. She noted that while top leadership is restricted to former internationals, non-international athletes can still participate in other capacities.

The association's Board of Trustees has agreed to review the constitution and will take disciplinary measures against anyone bringing the organization into disrepute. Aluko emphasized that the goal is to build a lasting platform for future generations, including current athletes like Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume, to transition into sports administration after their competitive careers end.
