Amorim gives Nigeria’s Chukwueze new Milan role after 4-2 win
Ruben Amorim says Nigeria forward Samuel Chukwueze can handle a right wing-back role at Milan after scoring in last week’s 4-2 win over Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim has explained his decision to move Nigeria’s 27-year-old forward Samuel Chukwueze from his familiar wing position into a right wing-back role at AC Milan. Chukwueze tested the position last week as Milan defeated Manchester United 4-2 in a pre-season friendly, scoring their first equaliser.
The positional change marks a significant adjustment for a player whose professional career has mainly been built around attacking from wide areas for both club and country. Amorim believes Chukwueze’s defensive contribution will depend largely on his attitude and willingness to work rather than on whether he began his career as a defender.
The Milan coach said Chukwueze possesses the determination needed for the role, while acknowledging that he is still developing defensively. Amorim also felt the Nigerian performed better without the ball against Manchester United and can help Milan retain control through his ability to contribute in possession.
Chukwueze has made 70 appearances for Milan since joining the club, with eight goals and three assists. His time at the Italian side has also included a loan spell at Premier League club Fulham, following his earlier period with Villarreal.
The experiment comes just before Milan begin their 2026/27 league campaign away to Torino on Sunday. The match will be played at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, giving Chukwueze an immediate chance to compete for a place in Amorim’s new defensive setup when the league season starts.
