Arthur Okonkwo targets Super Eagles role after Charlton move

Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has joined Charlton on a season-long loan from Wrexham, seeking regular football and continued progress.

Arthur Okonkwo has joined Charlton Athletic on a season-long loan from Wrexham as he looks to revive his club career and strengthen his claim for a regular place in Nigeria’s plans.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper completed the move on Thursday, August 20, after losing ground in Wrexham’s goalkeeping competition. The arrival of Anthony Patterson from Sunderland, alongside Danny Ward’s presence, left Okonkwo facing a reduced prospect of first-team football.

Okonkwo chose a move to Charlton rather than remain on the sidelines. His priority is to continue developing under manager Nathan Jones while competing for regular Championship appearances. The goalkeeper has previously worked his way through Arsenal’s academy and played an important part in Wrexham’s rise from League Two to the Championship through successive promotions.

He started 39 Championship matches for Wrexham last season and recorded 10 clean sheets. Jones believes the Nigeria international can add quality and experience to Charlton, having seen him produce two outstanding saves against the club during the previous campaign. The manager also welcomed Okonkwo’s desire to take on the new challenge.

The loan also carries significance for Okonkwo’s international ambitions. After changing his allegiance from England to Nigeria, he made his Super Eagles debut during the country’s successful 2026 Unity Cup campaign. He kept clean sheets against Zimbabwe and Jamaica as Nigeria won the trophy.

Regular action at Charlton would give Okonkwo another platform to improve while competing for a place in Nigeria’s goalkeeping group. He has settled positively into the squad and is determined to use the season to develop further under Jones.
