Four suspects remanded over killing of SC Villa captain David Owori

Four men aged 18 to 20 have been remanded by a Kampala court over the alleged murder and aggravated robbery of SC Villa captain David Owori.

Four men aged between 18 and 20 have been remanded in custody over the alleged murder of SC Villa captain David Owori. The accused are Ahumuza David, Elvis Munguci, Ssegawa Francis and Lubega Martin.

The quartet appeared before Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court in Kampala on Friday, August 21. They face charges of murder and aggravated robbery linked to an alleged attack on Owori on the evening of August 4.

Prosecutors told the court that the four men, acting with other people who have not been arrested, allegedly took two mobile phones and a bag containing Owori’s personal belongings. The prosecution further alleges that he was fatally assaulted during the incident and that the attack was planned.

Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera said the court could not hear the case because murder and aggravated robbery are capital offences. She informed the accused that they could seek bail from the High Court before ordering them to remain in custody. The case will return for mention on September 10.

The suspects are also facing allegations connected to other incidents. Prosecutors accuse them of attacking Congolese national Dr Jackson Ombeni, hitting him with a concrete paver and taking an iPhone 11 Pro Max, US$90 and other belongings valued at more than one million Ugandan shillings.

Two of the accused face an additional robbery charge involving Edrisa Mugisha. He is alleged to have been struck with a piece of wood before his Tecno phone was taken. Police investigations are continuing, with more arrests expected.

Owori’s death has caused mourning at SC Villa and among residents in Kampala. The football captain’s killing has also drawn attention to the wider impact of the case as the court process continues.
