Peixoto calls for Wolves mentality shift before Preston visit
Wolves coach Cesar Peixoto says his team must control its emotions and use two early victories to alter its mentality at Preston North End.
Cesar Peixoto wants Wolverhampton Wanderers to manage their emotions and play with greater control when they visit Preston North End, as they pursue their first victory of the season. The Wolves head coach believes the team’s desire to win contributed to a loss of structure during the second half of their previous match.
Wolves drew 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers after Raul Jimenez scored a late equaliser, but Peixoto said the performance exposed a mentality that needs to change. He felt the players became too emotional after the interval and moved away from the organised approach that had served them earlier in the game.
Peixoto’s side must also deal with several selection problems at Deepdale. Kieran Trippier and Yerson Mosquera are unavailable after injuries, while JJ Bellegarde is also injured and Rafiki cannot play. Trippier’s absence is particularly significant because of his experience and influence with the younger members of the squad, both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
The coach said the circumstances surrounding the Blackburn match created additional difficulties. Trippier was forced off, Mosquera continued despite being affected, and Wolfe had physical issues after returning later from the World Cup. Hugo also felt something, leaving Wolfe to play despite his own problems. Peixoto nevertheless praised the team for finding a late goal and securing a draw.
Wolves have started their season with two competitive matches, and Peixoto said the squad must maintain its identity when results or performances become difficult. He expects the players to compete for victory in every game without abandoning their style or organisation. Two or three wins, he believes, could help establish that mindset more firmly.
The team will have significant support at Preston, with 5,600 away fans expected to attend. Peixoto said supporters, players and staff all need to work in the same direction, while acknowledging the importance of backing the team throughout the match. He believes Wolves’ squad possesses more quality than it showed last season and can produce a stronger campaign.
