Merson questions Andrey Santos signing for Manchester United

Paul Merson has questioned Manchester United’s decision to sign Andrey Santos, saying the Brazilian midfielder offers too little in attack.

Paul Merson has questioned Manchester United’s decision to sign Andrey Santos, arguing that the Brazilian midfielder does not provide enough in key attacking areas. Santos joined United from Chelsea earlier in the summer transfer window.

The former Arsenal player said he was unable to identify a clear strength in the signing. In his assessment, Santos does not score regularly and does not create chances for teammates, leaving Merson doubtful about what the midfielder will add to United’s team.

Merson also said Santos does not compensate for those attacking shortcomings by being a player who breaks up opposition play. That combination formed the basis of his criticism of United’s recruitment decision.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson acknowledged that his assessment could prove wrong and that Manchester United may see qualities in Santos that he has not identified. His comments were presented as an early judgment on the player rather than a definitive conclusion about his career at the club.

Merson added that some Chelsea supporters had also questioned Santos’ contribution during his time with the London club. Their doubts, as described by Merson, centred on the same issue: what the midfielder brings to a side if he is neither supplying goals and chances nor disrupting opponents’ play.

Santos’ move therefore comes with scrutiny over his role and output before he has established himself at Manchester United. Merson’s view is that the club’s decision to sign him requires a clear explanation of the qualities that persuaded United to invest in the Brazilian midfielder.
