Bafana Bafana star Thapelo Maseko leaves Sundowns for Copenhagen

Thapelo Maseko has ended his Mamelodi Sundowns spell and joined FC Copenhagen on a four-year contract after thanking the club for his development.

Thapelo Maseko, 22, has left Mamelodi Sundowns for FC Copenhagen on a four-year contract. The Danish club confirmed the move as the Bafana Bafana winger begins a new chapter in his career.

Maseko marked his departure with a farewell message to Sundowns and the supporters who backed him. He credited the club with providing the opportunities, lessons and environment that helped him grow, while expressing lasting gratitude for his time in Pretoria.

The attacker joined Sundowns after developing at SuperSport United and became an important figure during the club’s African Football League campaign in 2023. He scored against Al Ahly in the semi-final and finished that competition with both the player of the tournament award and the top-scorer prize.

His progress at club level also led to international recognition with Bafana Bafana. Maseko recently scored the winning goal against South Korea at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding a major moment for his country to a breakthrough period with Sundowns.

Sundowns are currently seventh in the 2026 South African Premier Soccer League, with four points from two matches after one win and one draw. They have scored four goals and conceded three, while their wider recent run includes three draws, one win and one defeat. Their next league fixture is at home to Marumo Gallants on August 19, 2026.

At FC Copenhagen, Maseko will wear number 12. The club regard him as a fast, versatile winger capable of operating on either flank and attacking space. His move brings an end to his Sundowns spell, but his achievements in the African Football League and with Bafana Bafana have established the platform for his move to Denmark.
