Thapelo Maseko bids farewell to Sundowns after Copenhagen move
Thapelo Maseko has thanked Mamelodi Sundowns after completing a €1.5 million transfer to Danish club FC Copenhagen on a four-year deal.
Thapelo Maseko has completed his move from Mamelodi Sundowns to FC Copenhagen and sent a farewell message to the South African club and its supporters. The 22-year-old joined the Danish side in a deal valued at €1.5 million and signed a four-year contract.
Maseko’s departure comes after he was not included in Sundowns’ plans for the 2026/27 season. The winger had already spent the previous campaign away from the club, playing for AEL Limassol in Cyprus.
That loan spell helped revive his career and led to his inclusion in Hugo Broos’ squad for the 2027 FIFA World Cup. Maseko made three appearances at the tournament and scored the only goal in South Africa’s 1-0 victory over South Korea.
The win carried major significance for Bafana, taking them into the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time in their history. Maseko’s performances at the tournament attracted interest from Europe, with Copenhagen ultimately securing his signature.
Copenhagen is the former club of South African forward Sibusiso Zuma. Maseko now begins his own spell in Denmark after bringing his Sundowns career to a close.
In his goodbye message, Maseko expressed gratitude for the opportunities, education and experiences he received at Sundowns. He also thanked those who backed him during his time at the club and said the memories would remain important as he starts a new chapter.
