Benfica set €20m limit in Taylor Harwood-Bellis transfer talks

Benfica have set a maximum transfer fee of €20m (£17.3m) for Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis. The Portuguese club is currently in negotiations for the centre-back but will not increase their offer beyond this specific amount.

This financial ceiling presents a challenge because Southampton paid Manchester City €23.5m (£20.3m) for the player in 2024. Accepting the current Benfica limit would result in a financial loss for the English side. While there may be room to find a different formula to reach an agreement, the Portuguese club's stance on the total figure remains firm.

Benfica's management and Marco Silva have both approved the move, and the club has acted decisively to secure the defender. However, the club is facing financial difficulties that require player sales to manage existing debts and balance sheet deficits. This context means that recent departures do not provide an automatic budget for new acquisitions.

Southampton has previously shown resistance to lower offers, having rejected a €14m (£12.1m) bid from West Ham in January. Other clubs, including Hull City and Coventry City, have also been linked with the defender this summer. Benfica is banking on the player's personal desire to move to Lisbon to help bridge the gap with Southampton.

If a deal cannot be reached within the established financial parameters, Benfica has identified alternative targets. The negotiations are ongoing, but the current deadlock rests on the gap between Benfica's limit and Southampton's valuation.
