Benson Mhlongo demands clarity on Monnapule Saleng's absence

Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Benson Mhlongo has called for transparency regarding the situation involving Monnapule Saleng. The winger has been absent from the squad following reports from head coach Miguek Cardoso.

Cardoso stated that Saleng was separated from the team after he failed to show up for a Champions League fixture and later declined to attend the club's training camp. Consequently, the attacker has not appeared in any of the team's two matches during the current campaign.

Mhlongo noted that the lack of information surrounding the winger's status is confusing. He suggested that the underlying cause remains unknown, speculating that it could involve personal matters or financial disputes. He also noted that Saleng's previous difficulties at Orlando Pirates involved money, though he could not confirm if the same applies here.

Addressing the professional responsibilities of athletes, Mhlongo reminded players that their compensation covers more than just matchday appearances. He emphasized that players are contracted to attend training sessions and act as team players, regardless of whether they are starting, sitting on the bench, or watching from the stands.

The former midfielder also highlighted the difficulty of breaking into a squad with established talent. He suggested that players joining Sundowns must assess if they can actually displace the current starters. He used the example of competing against Khuliso Mudau in defense to illustrate the high level of competition within the institution.

Mhlongo concluded by suggesting that some agents may prioritize transactions over the best interests of their clients. He stressed that players must respect the club hierarchy and maintain the high performance levels required to earn a place in the starting eleven.
