Brentford prepare £40m bid for West Ham left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf

Brentford are preparing a renewed attempt to sign West Ham United left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf for a package worth nearly £40 million. The 21-year-old Senegal international is the subject of serious interest from the Bees as they look to secure his services this summer.

West Ham acquired Diouf from Slavia Prague last year for a fee estimated between £19 million and £22 million. An acceptance of the current Brentford proposal would represent a near doubling of the club's initial investment in less than a year.

Diouf's individual statistics from the 2025/26 Premier League season highlight his value despite West Ham's relegation. He recorded five assists and played 2,711 minutes across 32 league appearances. His attacking output included an average of 3.62 crosses and 0.23 big chances created per 90 minutes. He also featured in three matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Senegal.

While West Ham are currently in the Championship, the club is not under immediate financial necessity to sell. The Hammers have already secured £140 million through the sales of Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville this summer. This liquidity provides West Ham with the ability to retain key assets during their promotion campaign.

Coach Nuno Espírito Santo has identified the defender as a vital component for the club's return to the top flight. Although academy prospect Ollie Scarles is available, he lacks the established physicality and defensive consistency shown by Diouf. Replacing a player of Diouf's profile late in the transfer window would likely require a similar level of investment for a player unproven in the current system.
