Brian Norman Jr. must adjust tactics to beat Devin Haney

Brian Norman Jr. possesses the power required to reclaim the WBO welterweight title from Devin Haney, but his previous performance suggests a need for tactical evolution. During their 12-round bout last November, Norman lost via unanimous decision after a slow start allowed Haney to control the pace.

In that fight, Norman struggled with Haney's tendency to clinch and hold. The 25-year-old often lunged forward with single shots from too great a distance, allowing Haney to grab him and neutralize his offense. Instead of punishing these clinches with short shots to the head or using combinations to cut off the ring, Norman remained too passive and allowed the pattern to persist.

This lack of adjustment raises questions regarding the guidance provided by Norman's corner. Despite Haney repeatedly using the clinch to stop Norman's momentum, the fighter continued to use the same ineffective approach between rounds. To succeed in a rematch, Norman may require additional training support to ensure tactical changes are implemented while a fight is in progress.

While Norman secured a second-round stoppage against Josh Wagner on May 16, that victory did not necessarily prove he has corrected the flaws exposed by Haney. Wagner lacked the defensive movement and smothering ability that Haney utilized to disrupt Norman's rhythm.

Currently ranked as the number one contender by the WBO at 147 pounds, Norman remains in a prime position for a title shot. With 23 knockouts in his professional record, his ability to cause damage is evident when he finds clean openings. However, he must avoid the blueprint Haney provided for neutralizing his power by ensuring he does not get tied up every time he commits to a single punch.
