Bryce Henry’s BKFC DQ win over Julian Lane faces scrutiny at Mohegan Sun
Bryce Henry’s fourth-round BKFC disqualification win over Julian Lane is under scrutiny after Jimmy Sweeney argued the fight could have continued.
Bryce Henry beat Julian Lane by disqualification in the fourth round at BKFC Fight Night: Mohegan Sun in June. The 165-pound bout ended after Lane used an illegal grappling technique, leaving Henry with the win but prompting questions over whether the contest needed to be stopped.
Former BKFC welterweight champion Rico Franco was among those to assess the result. The interim welterweight champion said he watched the fight the following day and was struck by Lane taking Henry down, an incident that changed the shape of the contest before the disqualification.
Franco described Lane as a veteran and a durable fighter who has competed at a high level for many years. He also viewed Henry as a technically capable boxer who has moved between divisions. Henry’s victory over Lane added to his unbeaten record, but the manner of the result did not produce universal approval from fellow bare-knuckle fighters.
Jimmy Sweeney said he had not watched the full bout but had seen the sequence that led to the stoppage. The four-division BKB champion felt Lane’s foul should have brought a points penalty rather than an immediate end, arguing that the incident did not appear to have caused an injury serious enough to prevent Henry from continuing.
Sweeney also expressed sympathy for Lane, with whom he has fought twice, and said he hoped the contest could eventually be resumed. Lane, an ex-UFC fighter and former BKFC champion, has spent a long period competing in bare-knuckle boxing and was described by Sweeney as having been treated harshly by the decision.
Henry is due back at Mohegan Sun on August 21 against Carlos Trinidad-Snake. Sweeney believes Trinidad-Snake’s height, reach and awkward style will provide a demanding test, and said a Henry victory would put him in line for a world title opportunity. For now, Henry’s record includes a disputed win that remains tied to the fourth-round disqualification rather than a completed fight.
