Championship: Charlton boss explains Ouma delay after 2-1 win
Charlton manager Nathan Jones says Timothy Ouma will not be rushed into Championship football after the Kenya international missed the 2-1 win at West Ham.
Timothy Ouma has yet to make his competitive debut for Charlton Athletic, with manager Nathan Jones explaining that the Kenyan midfielder will not be rushed into Championship football. Ouma was left out of the squad for Charlton’s 2-1 victory over West Ham United at London Stadium.
Charlton secured the win through goals from Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell. Taty Castellanos missed a penalty in stoppage time for West Ham, allowing Charlton to preserve the result and continue their perfect start across all competitions this season.
Jones said Ouma had recently played for Charlton’s under-21 team, but indicated that the 24-year-old still needs to be introduced to senior football at the right time. The manager’s position means Ouma’s first appearance remains delayed despite his move to the club.
Ouma joined Charlton from Slavia Prague on an initial loan agreement. The deal includes an option for the English club to make the transfer permanent next season. He is yet to feature in a competitive match since arriving.
The result at West Ham gave Charlton three wins from three matches in all competitions this season. Ouma was absent from the travelling squad, while fellow Kenya international Collins Sichenje was named among the substitutes and entered the game in the 78th minute.
Charlton’s next fixture is a Carabao Cup second-round meeting with Tottenham Hotspur in north London on Wednesday evening. Ouma’s availability for that match was not stated, but Jones’ comments make clear that the club will continue to manage his introduction carefully.
