Chris Morris calls Faf du Plessis omission a major shock

Chris Morris has identified the absence of Faf du Plessis from the Joburg Super Kings squad as the most surprising development of the SA20 Season 5. Morris believes the former international captain remains capable of contributing significantly to a team despite being 42 years old.

Du Plessis led the Joburg side in all four previous seasons of the tournament, though a thumb injury interrupted his involvement during the middle of Season 4. Morris suggested that the decision to leave him out likely stems from the arrival of new coach Albie Morkel, who is tasked with focusing on the future of the franchise.

Morkel has taken over the coaching role from New Zealander Stephen Fleming, who recently moved to a position with the England national team. Morris noted that Morkel would have carefully considered his squad selection, which also excludes experienced players such as Imran Tahir.

While acknowledging the presence of many international stars in the league, Morris highlighted the effectiveness of the scouting system in finding talent through provincial, school, and South Africa U19 pathways. He noted that competitions like the SA20 Schools allow young players to gain recognition through standout performances.

Morris also commented on the domestic success of the SA20, noting that the high attendance at matches proves the league's effectiveness. He suggested that the tournament has achieved more success than previous South African attempts at T20 leagues and expects even greater growth in the future.
