Colombia awaits Carlos Utria's US debut against Israel Mercado

Colombian prospect Carlos Utria will make his United States debut against Israel Mercado in a 10-round super-lightweight bout in Las Vegas.

Colombia is anticipating Carlos Utria’s first fight in the United States, with the unbeaten prospect set to face Israel Mercado on Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds in the super-lightweight division.

Utria enters the contest with a 14-0 record and 11 knockouts. The 22-year-old Colombian won the World Boxing Council Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia, a result that has raised expectations around his next stage as a professional.

Mercado brings a 13-1 record to the fight, including seven victories inside the distance. The American will provide Utria with an opponent who has already experienced defeat but has also built a record with more than a dozen professional wins.

The meeting will take place on the night of the WBA welterweight world championship fight between Lopez and Romero. That setting gives Utria his United States debut on a major boxing programme as he looks to continue his unbeaten rise.

Utria prepared in Mexico for the Las Vegas bout. His camp has been viewed in Colombia and across Latin America as an important step in the development of a fighter increasingly associated with a new generation of the sport in the region.

The fight represents a fresh phase in Utria’s career after his success in the WBC Grand Prix. A victory would preserve his perfect professional record and strengthen the momentum behind a boxer whose profile has grown beyond Colombia.
