Dion Hotto goal hands Orlando Pirates 1-0 MTN 8 semi-final lead

Dion Hotto scored before half-time as defending champions Orlando Pirates beat Sekhukhune United 1-0 in the MTN 8 semi-final first leg.

Orlando Pirates took a 1-0 advantage over Sekhukhune United in the MTN 8 semi-final after Dion Hotto scored in the first leg at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. The Buccaneers, who are defending the title, will carry the narrow lead into the return fixture.

Pirates created the clearer openings during the first half but were wasteful in front of goal. Simphiwe Masilela sent an early effort wide after Yanela Mbuthuma unsettled the Sekhukhune defence, while Nkosinathi Sibisi headed off target from Thapelo Mokobodi’s delivery. Oswin Appollis also failed to trouble the goalkeeper with a free-kick.

Hotto went closer from another set-piece before the interval, forcing Melusi Buthelezi into a save. Sekhukhune’s best chance of the half fell to Ellis Rammala, whose attempt also missed the target, but the hosts were punished shortly before the break when Ghampani Lungu created the opening for Hotto to put Pirates ahead in the 43rd minute.

Pirates had an opportunity to extend their lead in added time, although Kamogelo Sebelebele could not find the target. Appollis then came close soon after the restart, striking wide after Sekhukhune had cleared a Hotto delivery into his path.

Sekhukhune improved after the interval and nearly levelled through Thabo Nkwana in the 59th minute. Sipho Chaine prevented the equaliser by turning the shot behind for a corner. Pirates later missed another chance when Sebastien Pedersen, making his debut as a substitute, shot over the bar in a one-on-one situation with Buthelezi.

The semi-final will be settled at the Amstel Arena next weekend. Before then, the same teams are scheduled to meet at that venue in a Betway Premiership fixture on Tuesday, giving Sekhukhune an immediate opportunity to respond before the cup tie concludes.
