Government backing strengthens South Africa’s 2026 Special Olympics Games

Support from national and North West authorities will help stage the 2026 Special Olympics National Games and expand athlete development in South Africa.

Government support has been secured for the 2026 Special Olympics National Summer Games, which will take place at Rustenburg High School in North West from 28 to 30 August. The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities and the North West provincial government are partnering with Special Olympics South Africa for the event.

The partnership is expected to broaden public awareness of Special Olympics and give athletes greater recognition from government structures. Support from both national and local authorities also provides a wider platform for the organisation than it had when staging the Games independently.

North West’s involvement helped bring the Games to Rustenburg after the provincial government offered to host them. The location will also allow communities in the province to learn more about Special Olympics and its work with athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The National Games will have an important selection role. Performances in Rustenburg will help identify South African athletes who may be chosen to represent the country at the 2027 Special Olympics World Games in Santiago, Chile.

A six-discipline health screening programme will run alongside the sporting event. Every athlete participating in the National Games is due to undergo the screening, making health support a central part of the programme.

More than 51 medical professionals from North West will receive training in procedures for working with people with intellectual disabilities. The training and screenings add a health component to the Games while preparing local professionals to support participants more effectively.
