Diamond League Silesia: Jefferson-Wooden wins 100m in 10.78 seconds

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the Silesia Diamond League 100m in 10.78 seconds, finishing ahead of Julien Alfred and Sha’Carri Richardson.

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the women’s 100m at the Diamond League Meeting in Silesia in 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred finished second in 10.83, while Sha’Carri Richardson took third in 10.96.

The result gave the triple world champion victory over two of the leading figures in the event. Alfred, the Olympic champion, produced a season’s best for second, while Richardson finished level on time with Jamaica’s Brianna Lyston but was placed ahead of her. Poland’s Ewa Swoboda was fifth in 11.00.

Jefferson-Wooden arrived in Silesia in strong form. She had already won the 100m in Stockholm in 10.84 and taken the event at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene in 10.78. She also claimed the United States outdoor 200m title in New York with 21.69 seconds.

Alfred’s second place ended a run of notable victories in the 100m and 200m. Her season had included 100m wins at the Oslo Bislett Games, where her wind-assisted time was 10.76, and the Gyulai István Memorial in Budapest, where she ran 10.87.

The Saint Lucian had also won the 200m in Rome, Monaco and London, recording 21.93, 21.51 and 21.66 seconds respectively. Earlier in the season, she won both the 100m and 200m at the Texas Invitational and took bronze in the 60m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń in 7.03.

Richardson’s third place came after a productive 100m campaign. She won at the USATF LA Grand Prix in 10.99, prevailed at the Star Athletics Sprint Series in 10.77 and finished second at the Prefontaine Classic in 10.79 before securing the United States national title in New York with another 10.77.
