Dladla praises Arrows staff after 1-0 MTN8 win over Sundowns

Abafana Bes’thende defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 in the MTN8 semi-final first leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday. The victory extended Arrows’ defensive run to five successive clean sheets in all competitions.

Coach Manqoba Dladla praised the work of his technical staff after Arrows protected their lead with a disciplined defensive performance. The run has included MTN8 victories over Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns, along with three goalless Betway Premiership draws.

Dladla singled out assistant coach Ashley Makhanya for his influence within the squad. Makhanya joined Arrows from Gomora United earlier in the season after working as a coach in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The coach said Makhanya’s contribution stretches beyond tactical preparation. He described the former player as hardworking, committed and knowledgeable, while also noting the high standards he sets for the squad. Dladla added that Makhanya provides guidance and support to the players away from the pitch and acts as a father figure within the group.

Goalkeeper coach Jacob Mokhasi has also been important to Arrows’ defensive structure since arriving from Marumo Gallants before the campaign. Mokhasi has previously coached at Gallants and SuperSport United, and his playing career included a spell with Orlando Pirates.

Dladla attributed the team’s resilience to the players’ approach in matches and training. He said the squad has been built around collective responsibility, with every player expected to remain ready to contribute whether starting or entering from the bench.

Arrows face Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday before meeting Sundowns in the MTN8 second leg on Sunday. The two teams will then play each other again in the league the following week, giving Arrows three encounters with Sundowns across consecutive weekends.
