Mngqithi reprimands Abushiri after Yanga’s 4-0 NBC Premier League win

Young Africans returned to the top of the NBC Premier League with a 4-0 victory over JKT Tanzania on Monday. The result gave the defending side nine points from three matches, level with Simba SC but ahead on goal difference.

The result was overshadowed by coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s criticism of teenage midfielder Juma Issa Abushiri. Speaking after the final whistle, the South African coach made clear that he was unhappy with the 18-year-old’s performance.

Mngqithi believed Abushiri was too focused on his own play instead of contributing to the team’s overall effort. He said the midfielder needed to approach his football with greater seriousness and adjust his attitude if he was to continue developing.

Abushiri, who is known as “Sugar” in Tanzania, was also warned against trying to turn matches into a personal showcase. Mngqithi said that approach could damage the player’s progress, while a more disciplined and team-minded contribution would help him improve.

Despite the reprimand, Mngqithi stressed that Abushiri remains a highly talented player. He said the club would support the midfielder and work with him, but added that the youngster must show humility and respond to the criticism.

The coach also indicated that he intended to speak directly with Abushiri. Young Africans now remain at the summit after three league matches, with the victory over JKT Tanzania providing the goal-difference advantage over their city rivals Simba.
