Semi Ajayi injury doubt after Hull's 2-0 Premier League win over Man United

Nigeria face uncertainty over Semi Ajayi after the defender suffered a hamstring problem during Hull City's 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United. The injury leaves Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle waiting for more information before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Ajayi had marked Hull's return to the Premier League with the opening goal at the MKM Stadium. The 32-year-old reacted fastest in the area to score in the 17th minute, but his afternoon ended early when he reported discomfort in his hamstring. Paddy McNair replaced him in the 64th minute.

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic said several defensive changes were forced by fitness concerns during the match. He explained that Ajayi had complained about his hamstring and that the club would know more after medical checks. Hull have 10 days before their next match, giving the club time to assess the defender's condition.

The timing is a concern for Nigeria, whose first two qualifiers are scheduled during the September 21 to October 6 international window. The Super Eagles are in Group L with Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau, and Ajayi's availability would give Chelle an experienced option at centre-back alongside Calvin Bassey.

Nigeria have other defenders available, but some alternatives carry their own concerns. Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu have previously received opportunities while facing criticism this season for mistakes that led to goals. Igoh Ogbu is returning from an Achilles injury, while Benjamin Fredrick has not played competitively since suffering a knee injury during Nigeria's 2025 World Cup play-off against DR Congo.

The squad also has an attacking fitness question to monitor. Femi Azeez was withdrawn after 30 minutes of Millwall's Championship win over Bristol City after feeling discomfort in his hamstring. He scored twice against Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup and supplied an assist in Nigeria's 3-0 final victory over Jamaica after a club season that brought 11 goals and seven league assists in 37 appearances.

Ajayi's medical assessment will determine whether he can return quickly enough to continue preparing with Hull and challenge for selection when Chelle names the squad for the September qualifiers.
