Driftwood 7s 2026: KCB Rugby beat Menengai Oilers 10-5 to reach final
KCB Rugby overturned a 5-0 deficit to defeat Menengai Oilers 10-5 in extra time and reach the Driftwood 7s final in Mombasa.
KCB Rugby reached the Driftwood 7s final after recovering from a 5-0 deficit to defeat Menengai Oilers 10-5 in extra time at Mombasa Sports Club on August 23, 2026. Vincent Onyala scored the decisive try in the opening minute of sudden-death play.
The result keeps KCB in contention for the ongoing National Sevens Circuit event, while Oilers were denied another appearance in the final. KCB will face arch-rivals Kabras Sugar in the tournament decider.
Menengai Oilers had established the advantage and appeared close to securing the result before KCB mounted its late response. The turning point came with the final attacking movement of normal time, when KCB forced its way forward from a scrum.
Festus Shiasi finished that sequence with a try close to the right-hand post, bringing the scores level at 5-5. Emmanuel Opondo then had an opportunity to win the semi-final in regulation time, but his conversion attempt missed the posts.
That failure sent the match into sudden death rather than ending KCB’s challenge. The bankers immediately applied pressure after the restart and created the opening they needed.
Onyala completed the attack by driving over the try line during the first minute of extra time. The former Shujaa co-captain’s score gave KCB a 10-5 victory and completed the turnaround from their early deficit.
KCB’s next assignment is the final against Kabras Sugar, with the victory over Oilers placing them one match away from the Driftwood 7s title. Oilers, meanwhile, leave the semi-final after surrendering their lead in the closing stages of normal time and extra time.
