Echegini apologises after Nigeria’s 2-1 2027 World Cup play-off loss

Jennifer Echegini has apologised after Nigeria lost 2-1 to South Africa in the CAF play-off, ruling the Super Falcons out of the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Jennifer Echegini has apologised to Nigerians after Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat by South Africa in the CAF play-off ended the Super Falcons’ hopes of reaching the 2027 Women’s World Cup. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder accepted that the players had not met expectations.

The loss came after Nigeria’s title defence at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations had already ended in the quarter-finals. Cameroon secured a 1-0 victory, preventing the defending champions from reaching the semi-finals and sending them into the route that offered another chance to qualify for the World Cup.

That final opportunity disappeared against South Africa. Nigeria will therefore miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition began in 1991, with the 2027 edition scheduled to take place in Brazil.

The Falcons’ WAFCON campaign had started with an unexpected defeat by Malawi. They responded by beating Zambia to move on from their group, but Cameroon ended their attempt to retain the continental title. South Africa then delivered the result that confirmed Nigeria’s absence from the global tournament.

Echegini said the setback should prompt honest reflection from the squad. She believes the players must identify what went wrong, take lessons from the campaign and use them to improve, rather than allow the disappointment to determine the team’s future.

The result leaves Nigeria facing a rebuilding period. Questions have emerged around the team’s preparation, technical direction and development of the squad, while pressure has grown on the country’s football authorities to review the structures supporting the women’s national team. Echegini nevertheless remains confident that the Super Falcons can respond constructively to the failure.
