Ogunade sets out NBBF pathway for Nigeria’s national teams
NBBF vice-president Babatunde Ogunade says Nigeria must build a long-term player development system to sustain success for its national teams.
Nigeria Basketball Federation vice-president Babatunde Ogunade says the country must establish a long-term development system to strengthen both its men’s and women’s national teams. He said the NBBF’s focus is on creating a sustainable route from youth basketball to senior international competition.
The plan comes as Nigeria’s national teams face scrutiny over preparation for major assignments. Concerns have centred on limited training camps and insufficient competitive exposure, issues Ogunade believes cannot be solved by brief preparations immediately before tournaments.
He said young players should develop through strong domestic and international competition, quality coaching and improved facilities. Regular matches against capable opponents would give them a clearer understanding of international demands while helping coaches assess weaknesses and track progress.
The pathway is intended to support several teams currently working towards important competitions. The D’Tigers are pursuing qualification for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, while the Junior D’Tigress are preparing for the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup. The senior D’Tigress are also preparing for their World Cup campaign in Berlin.
Ogunade said players need to be identified early and given opportunities to improve before they reach the senior teams. A broader talent base would reduce the pressure on established players and give coaches more options when selecting national squads.
The NBBF’s objective extends beyond producing individual players. Ogunade’s vision includes a continuous supply of athletes, coaches and support structures capable of maintaining Nigeria’s reputation in African basketball while improving its competitiveness on the global stage. The federation sees sustained development, rather than tournament-by-tournament preparation, as the basis for future national-team success.
