Mukamba absence leaves Hunters without star for Chibuku Cup test
Denver Mukamba remains away from Hunters as the relegation-threatened Zimbabwe PSL side prepare for a Chibuku Super Cup meeting with Herentals.
Denver Mukamba remains absent from Hunters, who sit 14th in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League with 25 points from 26 matches. Their record is four wins, 13 draws and nine defeats, with 19 goals scored and 31 conceded.
The forward’s latest disappearance has left the club without one of its most gifted players before their Chibuku Super Cup meeting with Herentals at Ngoni Stadium. Hunters are under pressure in the league, making a cup run an important opportunity to lift confidence.
Mukamba’s absence began several weeks ago. He first told the club he needed time away because of a tooth problem, but later gave the death of a relative as the reason for remaining unavailable. He still did not return to training, and Hunters eventually closed the door on him.
Coach Nesbert Saruchera has continued to treat the former Dynamos player as part of his plans. He has maintained that Mukamba remains a member of the squad and will return, despite the player’s prolonged failure to report for duty.
Mukamba has also been spending time in Highfield, where he is involved with Clive Kawinga and Rodrick Mutuma in training young players through a grassroots football project. The academy has no formal registration record with the Zimbabwe Football Association.
The latest episode follows a familiar pattern in Mukamba’s career. He has repeatedly gone missing around pre-season or late in campaigns, then returned when clubs needed his ability. His quality has often encouraged supporters and coaches to overlook his conduct, but Hunters’ recent form shows the cost of operating without a reliable attacking presence. They have lost four of their last five league matches, including a 3-0 defeat by Scotland Mabvuku, with their only victory coming away to CAPS United.
Hunters’ next league fixture is at home to Hardrock on August 22. Until Mukamba returns, Saruchera must manage a side whose struggles in front of goal have helped keep it close to the relegation fight.
