Ekwendeni FC stranded on Chizumulu Island due to waves

Ekwendeni FC members are stuck on Chizumulu Island after heavy waves on Lake Malawi prevented their return journey following a league fixture.

Ekwendeni FC is currently stranded on Chizumulu Island because of heavy waves on Lake Malawi. The 24-member squad travelled to the island on Monday via the Ilala to compete in a Chiwemi Northern Region Football League Division One match.

Coach Harold Phiri confirmed that the team completed its second match before the weather conditions on the lake made it impossible to travel back. The worsening waves have halted their return journey to Ekwendeni in Mzimba.

The team is facing a shortage of food as their initial travel budget has been exhausted. Phiri stated that the players are currently dependent on the generosity of local residents on the island. These well-wishers have been providing the squad with essential items, including flour, fish, and bathing soap.

Phiri has made an appeal for urgent help from supporters to assist the team while they wait for the lake conditions to become safe for travel. The situation remains uncertain as the team awaits a window to depart the island.

The delay has created doubt regarding the club's upcoming schedule. Ekwendeni FC is due to play Chihame All Stars in Ekwendeni this Sunday, but it is unclear if the players will return in time for the fixture.
