FAI withdraws support for Infantino as IFA backs UEFA stance

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has officially withdrawn its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino. This decision follows a board meeting where the governing body for football in the Republic of Ireland decided to rescind a letter of support issued earlier this year.

The FAI cited significant concerns regarding transparency, governance, and a lack of meaningful consultation following recent events. The association noted that its own history of overcoming governance challenges creates an obligation to advocate for best practices in football administration.

This move comes after UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation signed an open letter accusing Infantino of breaking trust through deception. The controversy stems from a failed attempt by Infantino to sell a stake in FIFA's commercial operations to a private investment firm.

While the Irish Football Association (IFA) has not formally withdrawn its support for Infantino, it has confirmed it is backing the current position held by UEFA. An IFA spokesperson stated that the body takes its responsibilities to both UEFA and FIFA seriously and is aware of the wider concerns within the football community.

The IFA is currently considering the recent developments and intends to engage through established governance channels. The Welsh FA became the first home nation to withdraw its support for the FIFA president last week.

Infantino's bid for a fourth term at the head of world football is now considered to be in a precarious position due to these developments.
