FIFA hands Argentina heavy sanctions after 1-0 World Cup final disorder

FIFA has suspended Argentina players and staff for the World Cup final disorder, while the AFA faces a $321,000 tournament fine.

FIFA has imposed major penalties on Argentina after the disorder that followed the team’s 1-0 extra-time defeat by Spain in the World Cup final in New York/New Jersey. Leandro Paredes received a 10-match international suspension and a $90,000 fine, while defender Nahuel Molina was banned for seven matches and fined the same amount.

Thiago Almada was given a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine. Argentina staff member Roberto Ayala was also banned for three international matches and fined $30,000. Spain midfielder Gavi received a one-match suspension with a $30,000 financial penalty for his part in the confrontation.

The final had already seen Argentina reduced to 10 players after Enzo Fernandez was sent off. Paredes was later dismissed after grabbing Eric Garcia by the throat and pushing Gavi. Molina was involved in a separate incident involving Spain captain Rodri as tensions escalated after the match.

The disciplinary case also covers conduct during the rest of the tournament. The Argentine Football Association has been fined $321,000 for several offences, including an incident during the 2-1 semi-final win over England. A banner displayed at that match carried the message “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, a claim that the Falkland Islands belong to Argentina.

The islands remain disputed between Argentina and the United Kingdom. Argentina invaded them in 1982 but surrendered several weeks later. In a 2013 referendum, residents voted overwhelmingly to keep the territory’s status as a British overseas territory.

The player and staff bans apply to Argentina’s international fixtures, extending the consequences of the final beyond the result itself. Spain’s victory secured the World Cup title, while the disciplinary decisions now leave Argentina facing long absences for key players and a substantial association fine.
