Ghana forward Nathan Opoku begins Northampton challenge after move
Nathan Opoku has joined Northampton Town from Leicester City on a three-year deal as the Ghanaian forward targets a fresh League Two start.
Ghana forward Nathan Opoku has joined Northampton Town from Leicester City, beginning a new stage of his career with the League Two club. The transfer was completed for an undisclosed fee and remains dependent on work permit approval.
Opoku has agreed to a three-year contract with Northampton. His arrival is the club’s 10th signing of the summer transfer window, adding another attacking option to manager Chris Hogg’s squad.
The forward decided to move after talks with Hogg about the role he could play at Sixfields. Those discussions helped convince Opoku that Northampton offered the right setting for his next step after his time with Leicester.
He also brings recent League Two experience from a loan spell at Newport County. Opoku scored six times in 16 starts last season and ended the campaign as Newport’s top scorer, giving him familiarity with the division he will now return to with Northampton.
That spell is expected to help him settle into his new team. Opoku has also played in Belgium, scoring five goals during a loan period with top-flight side OH Leuven, while his path to England began after he impressed in the American college system.
At Syracuse University, he helped the team win its first NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Championship and scored 11 goals in 25 games. Northampton will now wait for the work permit process to be completed before the Ghana youth international can fully begin his new challenge.
