Jordan James backs Wolves to do something special this season
Jordan James has joined Wolves from Rennes after a prolific Leicester loan and believes the club has the quality to target Premier League promotion.
Jordan James believes Wolverhampton Wanderers have enough quality to achieve something significant this season after completing his move from Rennes. The midfielder joined Wolves on Wednesday and arrives after scoring 11 goals during a loan spell at Leicester City last term.
James was named the Championship’s top young player last season and has made more than 100 appearances in England’s second tier. He is now aiming to reproduce that form at Molineux while working under new head coach Cesar Peixoto.
The 21-year-old said the transfer had taken several weeks to complete, but he was pleased to have finally joined and was eager to play in front of the Wolves supporters on Saturday. He also said his family was happy with the move and that he wanted to begin contributing immediately.
James sees Wolves as a Premier League club and considers promotion his main ambition. He believes the squad’s talent gives the team a genuine opportunity to reach the top flight this season, having learned at Leicester that promotion cannot be assumed despite individual performances.
His previous campaign was personally successful, even though Leicester endured a disappointing season as a team. James said being close to family and friends helped him perform at his best after a less satisfying period at Rennes, while his 11-goal return strengthened his belief in his own ability.
James expects to operate mainly as a number eight, a role that allows him to combine defensive work with late runs into the penalty area. He wants to add goals, assists and creativity, using his athleticism to cover ground and arrive in scoring positions from midfield.
The midfielder said he had spent the six weeks before the move trying to remain fit and ready to play. He intends to bring a high-work-rate approach to Wolves and make giving maximum effort for the club central to his first season in the old gold.
