Ghana plans 10 new stadia under Mahama government, minister says
Sports Minister Kofi Adams says Ghana will build 10 stadia, expanding an earlier plan for six mini stadia across the country’s regions.
Ghana’s government plans to build 10 new stadia after President John Mahama revised an earlier proposal for six mini stadia, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has confirmed. The expanded programme will cover the six newly created regions and include four additional facilities elsewhere in the country.
Adams announced the decision during the Ghana Football Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer of Excellence in Prampram. The change means the government will pursue a 10-stadium project rather than the six-facility plan previously linked to the new regions.
Western North, Oti, Ahafo, Bono East, Savannah and North East are each set to receive a stadium under the revised programme. The other four facilities are planned for the Upper East, Upper West and Volta regions, with one further site included in the overall allocation.
The Sports and Recreation Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, said the project had moved beyond an announcement. Finance Minister has issued commencement authorisation, while the government is completing the steps required for contracts to be awarded and construction activity to begin at the sites.
The facilities are intended to strengthen Ghana’s sports infrastructure and provide venues for football and other sporting activities. They would also increase the number of grounds available for domestic football and extend access to sports facilities beyond the country’s major cities.
The plan forms part of the Mahama government’s wider effort to improve sporting infrastructure. Its immediate focus is the delivery of stadium projects across regions that include the six new administrative areas, alongside the additional locations named in the revised programme.
