Simeone explains Lookman’s new role after Atlético’s 2-0 La Liga win

Atlético Madrid opened their La Liga campaign with a 2-0 win over Málaga as Diego Simeone explained Ademola Lookman’s unfamiliar role.

Atlético Madrid began their La Liga campaign with a 2-0 victory over Málaga, with Ademola Lookman deployed as the central striker. Diego Simeone said the decision was driven by the attacking options available to him for the opening match.

Lookman usually operates in a wider attacking position, but Simeone placed him at No. 9 as Atlético started the season without Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sorloth. Álvarez was not selected for the game, while Sorloth was unavailable because of injury.

The change gave Lookman a different responsibility in Atlético’s attack. It also raised the possibility that the Nigeria international could be used through the middle again, rather than remaining limited to his more familiar role, when the circumstances of a match require it.

Simeone described the move as an attempt to find a solution that could improve the team. He indicated that Atlético do not currently have the type of forward he wants available from the start, making flexibility necessary while the squad’s attacking options remain limited.

The coach’s explanation suggests that Lookman’s position will depend on the opponent and on which forwards are available. His ability to operate in more than one attacking role therefore gives Simeone another option as he manages the early-season situation.

The 2-0 result gives Atlético a winning start to their La Liga campaign. Lookman’s central deployment was one of the main tactical features of the match, but Simeone’s comments leave open whether it becomes a regular plan or remains a solution used when Atlético are short of established forwards.
