Sunderland pursue Leverkusen attacker Ernest Poku amid Fiorentina interest
Sunderland are willing to sign Bayer Leverkusen attacker Ernest Poku, but Fiorentina remain in the race for the 22-year-old Dutchman.
Sunderland have shown a willingness to sign Bayer Leverkusen attacker Ernest Poku, although the English club still has ground to make up in the race for the 22-year-old. Fiorentina are also working to secure the Dutchman, whose future in Germany remains uncertain.
Poku made his first full-season impact at Leverkusen after joining from AZ Alkmaar in 2025. He appeared 29 times in the Bundesliga last term and was involved in 10 goals, operating in several attacking positions.
Fiorentina have presented Leverkusen with two possible structures for the transfer. One would see Poku move initially on loan, with a compulsory purchase clause taking effect at the beginning of next season. The alternative is a permanent deal this summer, but at a fee below the player’s current valuation.
Poku is valued at between €20 million and €25 million. Sunderland have made their own enquiry and are the only English club currently involved, but their interest has not yet developed into an agreement. The Black Cats therefore face competition from Fiorentina as negotiations continue.
The attacker’s recent record extends beyond the Bundesliga. He has played in two leagues, represented the Netherlands Under-21 side successfully and featured in the Champions League last season. Those experiences have strengthened his profile as he considers his next step.
A move to Sunderland would give the club additional depth across the attack. Fiorentina’s spending in the transfer market could also affect the contest, with the Italian side having less room in its budget for another major deal. For now, Sunderland have indicated that they want Poku but must still close the gap to complete the signing.
