Fortune has suggested that Chelsea should consider signing Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana to bolster their squad. He believes the shot-stopper possesses unique qualities that would benefit top Premier League sides.
Onana is currently playing for Turkish club Trabzonspor on his second consecutive season-long loan. Although he is performing in Turkey, he remains under contract with Manchester United until June 2028. Fortune noted that Onana could be a significant asset for Chelsea, Newcastle United, or Aston Villa.
The recommendation focuses on Onana's ability to distribute the ball effectively. Fortune highlighted that the goalkeeper can deliver passes of 50 to 60 yards to midfielders or strikers, helping to break defensive lines. This ability to play out from the back is a trait highly sought after by modern managers.
While acknowledging the goalkeeper's recent difficulties, Fortune expressed hope that Onana can regain his confidence. He noted that mistakes by goalkeepers are highly visible to the public, but emphasized that Onana can be outstanding when required to initiate play from the defensive end.
Chelsea have yet to find a new permanent first-choice goalkeeper despite spending over £300 million during the summer under manager Xabi Alonso. Robert Sanchez currently holds the number one position, though his recent performances have drawn dissatisfaction from supporters. The club is looking to improve upon their 10th-place finish from last season, starting with a West London derby against Fulham on August 24.
