Francis Orbih outlines plans for 2028 Paralympic Games

Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) President Francis Orbih has initiated early planning to prepare physically challenged players for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. The announcement follows a successful outing for the national team at the Uganda Para Badminton International Championship in Nairobi.

Nigeria secured 14 medals during the tournament in Uganda, consisting of nine gold and five silver medals. Orbih noted that these results confirm Nigeria's position as a major power in African para-badminton. He highlighted the influence of Eniola Bolaji, Africa's leading female para-badminton player, as a source of motivation for the rest of the squad.

The federation president expressed a desire to qualify a high number of athletes for the Los Angeles games to build on the country's current momentum. He stated that the current board intends to provide necessary support to para-athletes to ensure they make a significant impact on the global stage.

Orbih acknowledged the financial contributions of various sponsors that aided the team's recent performance. The Abia State Government sponsored six players, while the Bayelsa State Government and the Police College Badminton Club of Lagos each funded one player.

The BFN president indicated that the federation is open to future partnerships with these and other organisations. He emphasized that the athletes have proven their ability to win medals and represent the nation effectively.
