From Lookman to Okonkwo, Charlton’s Nigerian Super Eagles link grows

Arthur Okonkwo’s loan move to Charlton extends a long Nigerian link that has also shaped the careers of Ademola Lookman, Joe Aribo and others.

Charlton Athletic have added 24-year-old goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to their squad on loan from Wrexham. The season-long move covers the 2026/27 Championship campaign and extends the south London club’s long association with Nigerian football.

Okonkwo was born in Camden to Nigerian parents and developed at Arsenal, initially playing for England at youth level. FIFA approved his switch to Nigeria in April 2026, and he soon received a first senior call-up from Eric Chelle for the Unity Cup.

His Nigeria debut came at The Valley, Charlton’s home ground. Okonkwo kept a clean sheet in the Super Eagles’ 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe and did so again in the final, a 3-0 win against Jamaica. He now returns to the stadium aiming to secure regular Championship football and strengthen his place in Nigeria’s plans.

The clearest example of Charlton’s pathway to the Super Eagles is Ademola Lookman. The winger came through the club’s academy, made his senior debut in November 2015 and quickly became one of the Championship’s most prominent young players. He scored twice against Brighton in December that year, finished his first Championship season with five goals and later added seven in the first half of the following League One campaign.

Lookman’s form earned him the 2016 Football League Awards’ Championship Apprentice of the Year prize before Everton signed him for £11 million. His career later included RB Leipzig, Fulham, Leicester City and Atalanta, followed by recognition at international level with Nigeria.

Joe Aribo also used Charlton as a launchpad. After arriving from Staines Town, he became an important midfielder and scored 10 goals in 39 league appearances during the 2018-19 League One season. He then helped Charlton defeat Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley and win promotion to the Championship before moving to Rangers.

The connection reaches back further through Sam Sodje, who had loan and permanent spells with Charlton, while Semi Ajayi came through the club’s youth system and was named in the first-team squad against Blackpool in January 2013. Ajayi did not play competitively for Charlton, but later joined Arsenal and became a Nigeria international.
