Gangata proposes Malawi Scorchers friendlies with Big Bullets and Wanderers

Malawi sports minister Alfred Gangata has proposed Scorchers friendlies against Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers before the World Cup in Brazil.

Malawi’s Scorchers could face Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers in preparation for next year’s World Cup in Brazil, under a proposal put forward by Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Alfred Gangata. The suggested matches would pit the women’s national team against two of the country’s leading domestic clubs before the squad leaves for the tournament.

Gangata raised the idea at a welcome breakfast for the Scorchers at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe. The event was hosted by National Bank, which is among the supporters backing the team as it builds towards its World Cup campaign.

The minister said matches against the two clubs would help the Scorchers measure their progress before travelling. He also proposed adding international opponents to the preparation programme, giving the team different levels of competition as the tournament approaches.

The friendlies remain a proposal, and no match dates or venues have been announced. If arranged, games against Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers would provide competitive tests within Malawi while allowing the national side to continue its preparations in front of home supporters.

Gangata also called on the players to recognise the backing they have received from Malawians. He pointed to the financial rewards and other assistance given to the squad by sponsors and well-wishers as evidence of the country’s confidence in the team’s prospects on the global stage.

He urged the players to respond to that support with discipline, commitment and strong performances when the World Cup arrives. The proposed fixtures would therefore serve both as preparation for Brazil and as an opportunity for supporters to watch the Scorchers before their departure.
