Georgia Hunter Bell wins European 1500m title in 4:07.78

Georgia Hunter Bell secured European 1500m gold in Birmingham, winning in 4:07.78 after controlling a cautious final and pulling clear late.

Georgia Hunter Bell won the European women’s 1500m title in Birmingham on Sunday, finishing in 4:07.78. The British runner opened a clear gap in the closing stages to take gold on home soil, with Poland’s Klaudia Kazimierska second in 4:08.80.

The final developed at a measured pace, with the field reaching 400 metres in 68.81 and 800m in 2:21.28. Hunter Bell moved to the front by 1200m, passed in 3:24.95, and then used her finishing speed to break away from the chasing group.

Portugal’s Patricia Silva took bronze in 4:09.22, while France’s Agathe Guillemot finished fourth in 4:09.62. Ireland’s Sarah Healy was fifth in 4:10.76, followed by France’s Adèle Gay, Czech Republic runner Kristiina Sasínek Mäki and Ireland’s Sophie O’Sullivan.

The victory gives Hunter Bell the European outdoor title that escaped her in Rome two years ago, when she finished second behind Ciara Mageean. It also adds to a major medal collection that includes Olympic 1500m bronze, World Championship 800m silver and Commonwealth Games 800m gold.

The 32-year-old has now won three major titles this year. Her previous victories came in the Commonwealth Games 800m in Glasgow and the world indoor 1500m in Torun. She had not recorded a personal best during the year, but her ability to manage tactical races and produce a decisive final surge again proved effective.

Hunter Bell said her approach had been to stay well placed without forcing the early pace, trusting her kick if the race became a short, fast contest at the end. She also credited the M11 training group led by Trevor and Jenny, while the earlier mixed relay victory by the British team provided extra encouragement. Her next stated target is the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest next month, and she is also due to meet leading 800m runners in Zurich later this month.
