Matthew Hudson-Smith wins third European 400m title in Birmingham

Matthew Hudson-Smith claimed his third European 400m title at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The European record-holder finished the race in 44.17 seconds to secure the gold medal on his home track.

Hudson-Smith faced a difficult assignment after finishing second in the semi-finals, which resulted in him running from lane nine. He maintained a strong pace from the start of the race to hold off Muhammad Abdallah Kounta of France, who finished in 44.40 seconds for the silver. Jonas Phijffers of the Netherlands took the bronze medal with a time of 44.41 seconds, setting a new national record.

In the women's 400m hurdles, Emily Newnham secured a silver medal with a time of 53.33 seconds. This performance represents the fastest run of her career and moves her into second place on the British national all-time list. Emma Zapletalová won the event in 52.91 seconds, while Fatoumata Binta Diallo took bronze with a Portuguese record time of 53.55 seconds.

Amy Hunt continued her pursuit of four gold medals at the championships by qualifying for the women's 200m final. She won the second heat with a time of 22.37 seconds, aided by a slight headwind of -0.1.

Two other British athletes will join Hunt in the 200m final. Dina Asher-Smith won the first heat in 22.49 seconds, while Success Eduan qualified as the fastest non-automatic entrant after clocking 22.56 seconds in the third heat. That heat was won by Rhasidat Adeleke of Ireland, who recorded a time of 22.43 seconds.
