GFA and Sports Ministry reject Queiroz's $150,000 salary demand
Negotiations to extend Carlos Queiroz's contract as Black Stars head coach failed after the Portuguese trainer requested a $150,000 monthly salary.
The Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry have rejected a $150,000 monthly salary demand from Carlos Queiroz. The veteran Portuguese coach sought this increase to extend his tenure with the Black Stars.
Queiroz was previously earning $80,000 per month, according to Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams. In addition to the salary increase, the 73-year-old trainer requested more foreign personnel for his technical staff to ensure continuity. These demands led to a breakdown in negotiations between the coach and Ghanaian stakeholders.
The GFA has now commenced the search for a new head coach. This follows Queiroz's decision not to extend his stay after leading the team to the 2026 World Cup. He originally joined the squad in April on a short-term contract to replace Otto Addo.
Assistant coach Desmond Ofei is currently considered a leading candidate to take over the senior national team. If a new appointment is made, it will mark the seventh head coach hired during the presidency of Kurt Okraku.
The search for a replacement is urgent as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers approach. Ghana is placed in Group C with Ivory Coast, Somalia, and The Gambia. The team is scheduled to return to competitive play in September, following their absence from the previous tournament in Morocco.
